History of Amir-ud-daula Public Library

From Provincial Museum to Public Library

The library’s journey began in 1868 when it was part of the State Museum Lucknow, known then as the Provincial Museum. It wasn’t until 1887 that the collection became accessible to student readers, marking the start of its educational mission. This initial phase laid the foundation for the library’s future development and expansion.

Relocation to Lal Baradari

In 1907, the library collection was moved to the upper storey of the Lal Baradari, a historic building constructed by Nawab Saadat Ali Khan between 1798 and 1814. This relocation was significant as it provided a more substantial space for the growing collection and enhanced the library’s accessibility to the public.

Chota Chattar Manzil: The First Public Library

By 1910, the library had outgrown its space at Lal Baradari, prompting another move to the Chota Chattar Manzil. It was here that the library officially opened its doors as the Public Library, Lucknow. This period marked a significant transformation, as the library began to establish itself as a prominent public institution in the city.

Purpose-Built Structure

In 1921, the foundation stone for a dedicated library building was laid by Sir Harcourt Butler. Completed in 1926, this new structure provided a permanent home for the library. The building was a gift to the Government of the United Provinces from the Taluqdars of Awadh, a gesture that underscored the library’s importance to the region. It was subsequently named after Mohammad Amir Hasan Khan, who was honored with the title Amir-ud-daula.
